#22 — Double Unders – WAY harder than they look
“Doubles-under” is a signature Crossfit move, a jump rope technique where you sweep the rope twice through but only jumping once. It’s very difficult because you need to jump high and straight, along with keeping the right rhythm.
One night when I saw the WOD (workout of the day) for the next morning, I had to swallow hard.
· 1 mile run
· 100 double-unders (DU)
· 30 deadlifts (DL)
· 800 meter run
· 50 DU
· 20 DL
· 400 m run
· 25 DU
· and finally 10 DL
Normally, if you don’t “have” double-unders, the coach will have you do twice as many single-unders as the stated double-unders. This not only takes additional time, it is fairly fatiguing on the arms and legs. So when I saw this WOD, I really wished I had double-unders. I had already planned to have my husband watch me someday soon to watch me and help me get them.
I’ve had lots of helpful athletes over my six months with Crossfit try to give me tips on how to do double-unders. That day, for some reason, it worked. Sarah suggested a slightly heavier and slightly longer rope – and told me to look slightly up. Ta Da! I was finally able to do it! It was more like a double, single, double, single, double, but I definitely did it! High fives all around and even sweaty hugs. I got to ring the bell, too. The coach called me the MVP of the day, even though that’s really not a thing. Another coach came over to encourage me to now go straight to double-unders and not throw in those dang singles. Ok, coach! I got this!!!
For now, I was very excited and couldn’t wipe the smile off my face feeling like a real athlete. I returned to the cubbies to grab my keys and my protein powder shaker jar. I filled my shaker jar with water and promptly shook it hard. It. Went. All. Over. Me. The lid was not on all the way and I was kind of sprinkled with protein powder and water. Not pretty. I couldn’t even look around to see if anyone saw that. Pretending I meant to do that, I walked quickly to my car where I normally park and then way too late and way down the street, I remembered I parked right outside of the gym door.
One minute you’re a winner! The next minute your loser with protein powder on yourself forgetting where you parked your car.
FUN FACT: Lemon cake is my favorite dessert.
